FIRST EDITION (a second edition appeared in 1853). Ling’s “Rules for gymnastics” is a highly detailed manual of gymnastic exercises for the Swedish army, written by order of the government, which also commissioned him to write Reglemente för bajonettfäktning [Regulations for bayonet-fencing], published the same year. Ling had begun printing his important Gymnastikens allmänna grunder only two years earlier in 1834. Hagelin, Kinetic Jottings, p. 149.
